At Urban Roots we grow a LOT of food for our neighbors – and we want to be able to do that for years and years to come.
To keep things growing and show respect for the land, we use sustainable and regenerative farming practices, including:
Monitoring + tending to soil health
Composting + avoiding chemical additives
Planting native plants + wildflowers
Employing cover crops & crop rotation
We are committed to listening to our community members and working to provide more culturally-relevant, farm-fresh produce whenever we can grow it on our farms.
We celebrate the traditions of honoring the land, working hard, sharing food and stories, and learning together on our farms.
Our Farms
East Austin Farm
7651 Delwau Lane, Austin, TX 78725
WHERE TO PARK/ACCESS
Accessible by bike from the Southern Walnut Creek Trail If traveling by car, pass the farm on your right on Delwau Lane, turn around, and park along the opposite side of the road. Drive slowly and watch out for cyclists, pedestrians and dogs. Secure your vehicle and walk on to the farm by the welcome sign – our only entrance! If accessible parking is needed, please reach out to your Urban Roots staff point of contact to arrange ahead of arrival.
A lush three-and-a-half acre plot between the Southern Walnut Creek Trail and Boggy Creek, our East Austin farm is a vibrant sanctuary for flora and fauna.
It’s a short pull-off from a busy highway, and staff and youth are used to pausing conversations while airplanes pass to and from the nearby international airport; yet, there’s an undeniable peacefulness and tucked-away feeling on the farm.
In 2022, Urban Roots was able to purchase this land that the organization had formerly leased for over a decade. This was a monumental move for Urban Roots, providing a permanent sense of home, agency, and security for the future of UR youth leadership programs, farming and food access efforts in the community.
South Austin Farm
4711 Winnebago Lane, Austin, TX 78744
WHERE TO PARK/ACCESS
Parking is available along Winnebago Lane, but please do not block mailboxes and driveways of neighboring businesses. Access the farm by walking through the front gate on Winnebago Lane. With construction planned over the coming years, please be sure to check Urban Roots emails and event notifications ahead of arrival for more specific instructions.
A green reprieve amongst neighboring warehouses, apartment buildings, and parking lots is nine acres of soil and plants comprising the South Austin farm.
Urban Roots began leasing this land in 2021 and, before planting a single seed, engaged in meaningful conversations with members of the surrounding Dove Springs neighborhood and partner community organizations in the area.
Youth leaders met with community members, tested the land’s soil alongside staff and volunteers, and plans were laid for what was needed and what would thrive. This farm is presently home to over a 100 native or adapted fruit trees (including plum and peach varieties) and is woven through with patches of wildflowers.
The presence of the farm guarantees green space amongst an otherwise concrete-dominated urban area and provides physical, ecological and mental benefits to the community – in addition to a safe gathering space, outdoor programs, and a source of fresh produce.
The Future of Our Farms
In 2024, Urban Roots is expanding fundraising efforts to further develop the future of the East Austin farm as a special growing and gathering place for the community and homebase for expanded youth programming, and the South Austin farm as a hub of potential for setting down more roots while building up accessible experiences and facilities. These next chapters will further our vision of realizing a more just and joyful food future for Central Texas.
