![April 10 is Dolores Huerta Day (her birthday!) and we’re reflecting on the legacy, work and activism of the Latina activist and advocate, plus the many who fought alongside her for farmworker rights. Huerta was first Inspired by the local activism of her parents and the agricultural community she grew up in – and later, the struggles of her students, the children of farmworkers while she was a teacher. She organized as a leader in the Stockton Community Service Organization, met César Chávez, and then co-created the National Farm Workers Association (now the United Farm Workers), to advocate for farmworker rights. The rallying cry “¡SÍ se puede!” (“Yes, we can!”) originated with Huerta and still resonates today.
At 94, Huerta has dedicated her life to advocating for better farmworker conditions and farmworker rights, and continues to speak out against gender discrimination and advocate for equality and civil rights.
Her legacy showcases the power of advocating for each other, communal care, and the belief that our world can be better when we do the work together – “¡SÍ se puede!”.
