See what’s sprouting at our new S. Austin farm!

We are excited to share the news about one of our biggest adventures . . . a second farm! We are eternally grateful to the City of Austin (our new landlord!), our Dove Springs neighbors, and our amazing partners and donors whose steadfast belief in our mission to cultivate youth leadership and nourish the community through food and farming enabled us to take this next big step.

In August 2020, our lease with the City of Austin for a new Urban Roots farm site in Dove Springs officially started. Prior to the pandemic, we envisioned a different type of announcement that would allow community members to visit the new farm site and participate in a groundbreaking ceremony. For now, we had to hit pause on that, but we want you to know that we still intend to host community members for a special gathering when it is safe to do so.

In the meantime, Urban Roots Farm Manager Montana has started some work to get the soil ready for planting. While there isn’t any food growing there yet, we recently planted some fruit trees and there’s more general maintenance unfolding so that the land can be suitable for farming in a couple of seasons. The farm is already going from brown to green as the oats and peas that were planted for soil health begin to sprout.
