We are in full-on harvest mode at Urban Roots. Both our South Austin and East Austin farms are thriving this fall. We continue to remain grateful for our dedicated Community Crew members who are helping us keep our farm operations on track!
We harvested our first cabbage crop of beautiful green and purple napa cabbage at the South Austin farm. Our beets, broccoli, and carrots will be ready for harvest for our hunger relief partners in the weeks ahead. Plus, our first onion bed was seeded.
Our East Austin farm is bustling, as well, with lettuce and bok choy currently growing in the ground, and radish, turnips, and others on the way! Our planting continues to focus on succession planting so we can continue to provide food during the cold winter months.
Now more than ever, we are focused on sharing as much food as possible with our neighbors. In fact, we set a new goal to contribute 75% of what we harvest to our hunger relief partners. Last month alone, we distributed over 3,000 lbs of food, and we are still working hard to continue those contributions over the rest of the season! We will continue to nourish our community via these partnerships and aim to add more before the season is over.: Go Austin/Vamos Austin (GAVA), the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, and Farmshare Austin. Finally, we’ve improved our internal systems to increase efficiency and ensure that we’re getting quality produce out to our partners in the amounts they can use and when they can use it.
We are currently partnering with Farmshare Austin, and soon our veggies will be available through more wholesale partnerships. Find out where you can find Urban Roots veggies this fall.
