Today we honor and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his incredible legacy of service, compassion, leadership, and justice. We look to Dr. King’s legacy as we help to cultivate the next generation of compassionate, thoughtful, and creative leaders who focus on equity, serving our community, and the greater good of all people, regardless of their race, income, sexual orientation, and gender.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is an outstanding role model for leadership, and we will forever remember what he stood for. As Dr. King said in his iconic ‘I Have A Dream’ Speech, “So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
At Urban Roots, we strive to live our values by looking first to our own practices. We created a Board level committee that is reviewing our internal processes and their impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are implementing equity-focused hiring practices. And we have conducted a pay analysis and made adjustments to increase equity across the organization. And there’s more to come. We share these practices not for praise, but to be part of the conversation around solutions.
Our actions are just the first steps of many that we hope will help strengthen our organization and further Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for America. We look forward to connecting with you along the journey.
