Volunteer on the Urban Roots Farm

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Urban Roots! Each year we grow over 25,000 pounds of food, and we couldn’t do it without your help.

Community Volunteer Days are Generously Sponsored by:

Things To Know About Volunteering on the Farm

Please read and follow this information carefully, as it has been designed to set you up for success as a volunteer at the Urban Roots Farm.

Age Requirement: The minimum age to volunteer is 10 years old, and children 10-13 years old must be accompanied by an adult. All minors under 18 who are not accompanied by a parent/guardian must have a signed parental consent form on file with Urban Roots. Click here to download the parental consent form for youth volunteers (form is in English and Spanish).

We work rain or shine: If it looks like rain, the farm work must go on! We have a lot of fun on muddy and rainy days. We will only cancel in the event of extremely heavy rain or a thunder and lightning storm over the farm. In the event of a cancellation (very rare) we will post it on our Volunteer Days page no later than one hour before the scheduled volunteer day.

Arrive on time: It is critical that you arrive and are on the farm ready to go by the start time listed for your day (please double check as they differ occasionally). If you know you will be more than 15 minutes late, we ask that you do not join us for the day. The shift starts with an orientation circle, followed by instructions on the day’s tasks that are important for your success. If you miss these and we are already in the fields when you arrive, please plan to come back and try on another day.

What to Wear & Bring: You will be working outside the entire time! Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, and dress appropriately for the weather. We recommend sun screen and bug spray. Bring a re-fillable water bottle– the farm has drinking water available, but we do not provide cups. We provide work gloves that you can borrow but feel free to bring your own. For safety and sanitary reasons, we ask that you do not bring dogs to the farm.

How to Get There: The Urban Roots farm is located at 7651 Delwau Lane, in East Austin near the intersection of Bolm Road and 183.  If Google Maps proves confusing, here are some handy printable driving directions. We also highly encourage volunteers to consider biking to the farm, as we are located along the Southern Walnut Creek Bike Trail.

Parking: Please park on the street, observe all signage, and park as far onto the north shoulder of the road as possible. Walk down to the entrance of our farm by the Urban Roots sign and walk onto the farm via our driveway. Please do not park in front of our neighbors’ homes or walk through their yards on your way to the farm. Thank you for helping us value and respect their privacy.

Thank you for working with us on each of these points. We want everyone to have a very positive and successful experience with us!
