Your Support Helps us Grow

Amplify Austin Day was a huge SUCCESS! We’re extremely grateful to the 104 donors who helped us raise $25,210, which was above and beyond our $15,000 goal. These generous donations will help fund our summer farm program that we are currently recruiting for, and help us accomplish our mission of community nourishment and youth empowerment. This allows us to purchase everything from seeds and equipment, to funding youth participation awards that they earn for their hard work. Thank you for your support for this year’s Amplify Austin Day; we can’t wait to update you as we roll out our summer farm program. Keep an eye out on our blog, newsletter, and on our social media @urbanrootsatx.

About Ray Prim & Band:

2016 Black Fret Recipient, Ray Prim, is a Singer Soulwriter based in Austin, Texas. His music takes you back to the days when songs were inspiring, meaningful and thought provoking. His tunes are melody-based short stories that anyone can relate to and identify with. It only takes one of his many songs to be instantly hooked. Five words sums it up – Ear Candy for the Soul. Ray will be performing with fellow band members Christina Steele (violin), John Ray (percussion), Brian Mendes (percussion), Adam Prado (bass), Alberto Ferrer (bass), Jason Cherry (bass), Kim Zielnicki (violin), Mike Robledo (vocals), Marianna Tanguy (keys), Courtney Castaneda (Cello), Diana Burgess (Cello) and Cait Coughlan (Viola).

About Chulita Vinyl Club (CVC):

CVC is made up of women, gender-non-conforming, non-binary, LGBTQ+ and self-identifying people of color. CVC launched in 2014 with the context of providing a safe space for empowerment, togetherness, and to utilize music and vinyl as a form of resistance against the erasure of culture. The CVC ATX chapter puts an emphasis on individuals of mixed-heritage combining narratives to speak crucially about intersectional identities. Each Chulita has their own unique identity. They are not to be classified as one nationality or culture; they can be brown, black or white and all shades in between. The unifying denominator is the belief that el disco es cultura and they have established a strong coalition deliberately choosing to only play vinyl with the goal of activating a musical history that might not otherwise be shared in the digital age.

Help us reach our $15,000 fundraising goal to support the summer farm program!

What’s your word for 2022? You might have chosen family, joy, or considering our world today, endurance! Choosing a word has become a popular way to provide focus for the year, and it’s an exercise program leaders have led with Urban Roots youth long before it became trendy. Sharing their word creates a space for youth to practice empathetic listening and vulnerability.

Demonstrating vulnerability builds trust and can lead to authentic connection and a sense of belonging, which can make all the difference for youth leaders. Nitida, from the 2019 South Austin Internship cohort, said that the sense of community they built allowed her to be “able to talk to other people and feel at home conversing with them.”

That sense of being at home with one another deeply impacted Rae, a 2020 Food and Leadership Fellow. She said, “One of the biggest things that Urban Roots gave me was this feeling that I had a community that supported me… that I was allowed to ask for help from my community, that I was allowed to be vulnerable. It’s very impactful, and I’m very thankful for it.”

Vulnerability, a sense of belonging, empathetic listeningthese are the social-emotional skills that have become most essential for today’s most effective leaders, and Urban Roots youth demonstrate every day that they are well on their way!

To support Urban Roots youth on a leadership journey that will enrich their lives and in turn enrich their communities, you can give to Urban Roots before Amplify Austin Day, March 2-3, 2022. Gifts at every level will support leadership development by covering program costs, from seeds to youth participation awards, for this summer’s farm program.

We hope you enjoyed the youth stories we shared for this year’s Amplify Austin Day that speak to the transformative power of food and farming.

Amplify Austin Day ends today! Give by 6 p.m. tonight to support Urban Roots youth on a leadership journey that will enrich their lives and in turn enrich their communities. Gifts at every level will support leadership development by covering program costs, from seeds to youth participation awards, for this summer’s farm program.

About the Summer Farm Program

Each summer, the farm program unites a diverse group of 36 youth to learn and grow on the Urban Roots Farm. Young people age 14 to 17, many living in systematically under-resourced communities in Austin, spend 6 weeks strengthening life and leadership skills, building a unique, nourishing connection with food, and working hands-on to increase food access in our community.

Through the summer farm program, each youth has the opportunity for a transformational experience spending hundreds of hours on the farm, harvesting thousands of pounds of sustainably grown produce, participating in dozens of interactive workshops and cooking classes, and serving our neighbors in need through donating vegetables and volunteering at hunger relief agencies. Each program activity focuses on transferable life and leadership skills, personal health and wellbeing, and food justice values and knowledge that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Early giving for Amplify Austin is happening now!

Something that really inspired me and motivated me was seeing how some of the other interns were growing out of their shell, becoming leaders, and having a voice for themselves. It motivated me to grow more.

Jeff, Food and Leadership Fellow, 2020

Sure, Urban Roots youth help to grow some of the most beautiful produce in town, but that’s not all that’s growing on the farm. The youth themselves are growing in ways that inspire us every day, whether they are trying new skills, like growing and cooking their own squash for the first time, or facilitating an intergenerational recipe development project in the community.

Urban Roots programs support youth leaders as they explore the very foundation of who they aretheir identity, their personal food stories and how those stories are connected to their culture; and they practice leadership skills like public speaking, team-building and problem-solving. South Austin Intern, Melanie, shared this about her experience, “I realized I can actually do this! My self-esteem started to rise.” With every new experience, every connection with fellow youth, they bravely step out of their comfort zones. And the reward for that kind of courage is a more deeply rooted confidence and empowerment, and our community is all the better for that!

Early giving for Amplify Austin is happening now! Support personal growth and confidence of youth leaders in our community by giving to Urban Roots before Amplify Austin Day, March 2 – 3, 2022. Gifts at every level will support leadership development by covering program costs, from seeds to youth participation awards, for this summer’s youth farm program.
